ABB's headquarters for positioners is located in Zurich, Switzerland. Its process automation products are widely used in industries such as petroleum, electric power, metallurgy, papermaking, and water treatment. ABB positioners cover almost all automated industrial fields. The introduction of ABB positioners provides advanced tools for the digital communication of on-site actuators and the integrated management of the entire plant. Breaking through traditional concepts, ABB positioners adopt TEIP11 as the core component, combined with microprocessing technology and built-in communication functions. After installation, they are suitable for controlling rotary and linear valves, with high positioning accuracy and a large stroke range: linear stroke: 20–150mm; rotary type: up to 125 degrees. The air capacity is ≥13.5kg/hour, and air consumption is ≤0.03kg/hour. Through automatic zero/span adjustment, commissioning is simplified. It uses sensor technology for temperature and position compensation, featuring excellent anti-vibration capability up to 10g (10–150Hz) and a temperature range of -40–+85°C. Through HART or Profibus/FF communication interfaces, real-time contact between the on-site and the control room is established, enabling parameter adjustment and status monitoring. The freely configurable output characteristics maximize the improvement of the output characteristics of ball valves/butterfly valves. Low-cost ball valves/butterfly valves combined with intelligent valve positioners can achieve the characteristics of both shut-off valves and control valves.
The core of the ABB positioner is a microprocessor-controlled CPU, where all program processing and calculations are performed. The input signal and position feedback are processed after 12-bit A/D conversion with 4000 steps and 20ms sampling. This ensures the accuracy and speed of signal processing. The CPU is powered directly from the input signal.
The operating program includes a self-tuning process for automatic parameter adjustment and an adaptive program for optimized control operations of precise positioning. It is an electrically operated pneumatic control valve with a 3/3 pneumatic switch. The positioning electrical signal sent from the CPU is proportionally converted into an air signal, that is, the 3/3 pneumatic switch is adjusted proportionally. The gas output from the positioner to the pneumatic actuator and the gas discharge are both adjusted proportionally. When the set positioning value is reached, the 3/3 pneumatic switch closes at the middle position.
The ABB positioner is equipped with a built-in operation keyboard, including an LCD display and 3 buttons. The design of the operation keyboard is based on optimizing on-site configuration, commissioning, and monitoring during operation. In addition, ABB is a standard two-wire device. The supply voltage generates a 4–20mA signal, and no external power supply is required. When the positioner works with factory-set values, it can be used without any digital communication. If communication is needed, it can be done through the RS232 interface and LKS adapter, or by modulating communication on the 4–20mA signal.
